Generally progress is slow, players fight against hordes of enemies until they get better gear and skills and then can use them to accomplish their goals. Each character class has its own play style, with different rules and elements to set them apart from one-another, giving players new options and challenges each game. Yet with the way equipment is random, and what skills players pick, characters can end up completely different with some fun skills.

Roaming monsters are essentially mini-bosses with specialized moves that often seem overpowered on first glance, but after some consideration, players will spot the weaknesses in the attack patterns so they become beatable. Sure, Massive Darkness 2 provides a page of introductory text and a short paragraph before each scenario which sort of acts as a story, but it’s bare-bones, and the story rarely manifests in the gameplay, which leads to a hollow feeling when paired with the straightforward combat. p>It has been 10 years since the Lightbringers defeated the Darkness and made the surface world safe.There are 68 detailed and creative minis in here, and they all look great, which is especially important because there are 6 copies of each of the 8 mob minions. Even when you figure out what goes where, the setup of any map takes at least a half an hour from cracking the box open before anyone is ready to play. With 3 rarity levels, every time players come across a Treasure icon, they draw Treasure tokens from the Treasure bag to determine the rarity of the items they find.

As they battle through the hordes, they accomplish objectives ranging from stopping monsters, opening gates, and killing bosses.
